Some provinces require you to submit your fingerprints to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They run a background check against their database for any criminal record. Background information and turn around times can also differ greatly between states. Quebec tends to be most strict, only allowing name change where a significant reason can be provided and taking 6 months for applications to be finalised.
